Yankees bullpen strategies evolve for October

Blake leads the pitch design overhaul

Matt Blake replaces Larry Rothschild to lead a pitching staff centered on data and technology. He is 34 years old and formerly worked as the pitching director for the Cleveland Indians. Blake works with Sam Briend, the Director of Pitching, to apply research on functional anatomy and the overhead throwing population. Briend came to the organization from Driveline Baseball, which operates as a data-driven training facility. Before hiring Blake, the Yankees interviewed college coaches Chris Fetter of Michigan and Matt Hobbs of Arkansas. David Cone also received an interview due to his blend of old and new school pitching methods. Blake uses Rapsodo cameras and Edgertronic video to interpret data regarding spin axis and spin efficiency. He focuses on pitch tunneling to help pitchers make mechanical changes. This new approach targets the analytics gap that Brian Cashman identified in late June. Blake provides "bite-sized nuggets" of information to help players implement what they learn from video analysis. The staff includes assistant pitching coaches Preston Claiborne and Desi Druschel. Blake relies on his background in psychology to communicate complex technical data to the roster. He emphasizes the integration of strength and conditioning with rehab to keep pitchers on the mound. Blake previously worked at Cressey Sports Performance, where he utilized video analysis to help athletes. He focuses on the kinetic chain to improve pitcher efficiency.

Boone manages high-leverage shifts

Manager Aaron Boone manages a bullpen that a scout described as a mess. The relief corps holds a 27-19 record and a 3.69 ERA, but the group allowed an ERA over 7 since late June. Boone transitioned the closing duties from Clay Holmes to Luke Weaver during the final two weeks of the season. Holmes surrendered 11 blown saves before the team moved toward a closer-by-committee strategy. Holmes previously recorded 30 saves with a 3.14 ERA as an All-Star closer for the Yankees. Weaver, a 32-year-old veteran who has only recorded 2 career saves across 202 career appearances, posted a 0.95 WHIP and a 3.64 strikeout-to-walk ratio during his tenure in the American League during this 2026 season. You should watch if Boone returns to the more conservative Holmes when the pressure of the ALCS increases. Weaver maintains a 3.62 ERA and records 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings. Weaver also completed 62.2 innings this season while recording 2.8 walks per nine innings and 0.9 home runs per nine innings.

Pitcher ERA K/9 BB/9 HR/9 IP
Luke Weaver 3.62 10.6 2.8 0.9 62.2
Clay Holmes 3.14 13.0 1.1 1.1 30.0

Staff stability and roster changes

The Yankees coaching staff includes assistant pitching coaches Preston Claiborne and Desi Druschel to support Blake. Desi Druschel rejoined the organization after a stint with the Mets. The staff also includes Luis Rojas as third base and outfield coach and Dan Fiorito as first base, infield, and baserunning coach. Tanner Swanson continues as the major league field coordinator and director of catching. The team also promoted Jake Hirst from hitting coordinator to the major league staff. The hitting staff includes James Rowson and assistant hitting coach Casey Dykes. The coaching staff works to stabilize a group that struggled with injuries to pitchers like Luis Severino and Domingo German throughout the year. The staff also manages the transition of personnel like Pat Roessler, who moved to a different role in the organization. The defense also faced challenges after falling to 11th in defensive runs saved. Blake aims to improve the staff by interpreting advanced data and communicating it effectively. He uses video technology to help pitchers adjust their mechanics, much like the Astros did with Verlander. The team faces the challenge of managing high-leverage situations without a consistent ninth-inning presence. Will the current bullpen depth suffice to close out the series? The Yankees continue to evaluate their options as the postseason progresses.
