Jannik Sinner’s ranking defense and the TKO IMG merger
Carlos Alcaraz leads the Race to Turin by over 1,000 points as Jannik Sinner faces a knee injury recovery. Meanwhile, TKO Group Holdings has completed a $3.25 billion acquisition of IMG and other assets from Endeavor.
The ranking fight
Jannik Sinner ended his 2026 season on October 6 after deciding he needs medical treatment for his knee until 2027, which removes him from the fight for the year-end No. 1 ranking before the ATP Finals in Turin. Carlos Alcaraz leads the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin by more than 1,000 points. Sinner holds 11,500 points, while Alcaraz holds 11,250 points in the ATP Rankings. Alcaraz won his second US Open title in New York by defeating Sinner in the final, losing only one set during the tournament. Sinner secured six titles on the ATP Tour this year, including a Wimbledon victory where he defeated Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. Sinner won titles in Vienna and Paris. Alcaraz completed a Career Grand Slam with his victory at the Australian Open. Alcaraz currently has 57 weeks as World No. 1. Sinner’s 65-week debut reign ended after he lost to Alcaraz in the US Open final last year. Sinner’s 66 weeks as World No. 1 places him 12th among the 29 ATP No. 1 Club members. Sinner was the champion in 2024 and 2025. Alcaraz’s victory in Melbourne was significant because it allowed him to extend his lead over Sinner in the battle for World No. 1.
The points math
The rankings will change next Monday when points from last year’s performances expire. Sinner will lose 1,500 points from his 2025 ATP Finals win, while Alcaraz will lose 200 points from his group stage exit in Turin. This change moves Alcaraz to 11,050 points and Sinner to 10,000 points. You know that defending points dictates the entire season, yet Alcaraz holds a massive advantage because he only defends 200 points. Sinner must win the ATP Finals to secure his second consecutive year-end No. 1 ranking. Alcaraz holds a 32.9% average for return games won in 2026, which is higher than Sinner’s 32.63% from last year. Alcaraz also recorded a 35.8% rate for first-serve return points won and a 54% rate for second-serve return points won. Alcaraz converted 44.4% of his break points.
| Player | ATP Ranking Points | Race to Turin Lead |
|---|---|---|
| Jannik Sinner | 11,500 | 0 |
| Carlos Alcaraz | 11,250 | 1,000+ |
Alcaraz enters the indoor swing following a loss to Cameron Norrie in his Paris opener. Sinner’s season included a shocking second-round exit at the French Open against Juan Manuel Cerndolo, where he suffered from physical cramping and heat exhaustion. Alcaraz became the youngest player to finish a year at No. 1 when he achieved the feat in 2022. Sinner will be seeded No. 2 for the finals, even though Alcaraz will be seeded No. 1 due to the Race to Turin standings. Will Sinner’s knee recovery allow him to reclaim dominance in 2027?
The business merger
TKO Group Holdings completed the $3.25 billion all-stock acquisition of IMG, On Location, and Professional Bull Riders from Endeavor. This transaction increases Endeavor’s ownership in TKO. Silver Lake is preparing to take Endeavor private at an equity value of $13 billion. Endeavor reported revenue of $7.11 billion for the year, though a net loss of $1.21 billion offset these gains. IMG manages media rights, production, and brand partnerships for more than 200 rightsholders, including The R&A, the All England Lawn Tennis Club, and Major League Soccer. On Location provides hospitality for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The acquisition includes On Location, which provides luxury experiences for over 1,200 sporting events. TKO also owns the UFC, WWE, and Professional Bull Riders. Professional Bull Riders is the premier bull riding organization, organizing more than 200 annual live events for more than 1,000 bull riders. PBR utilizes the televised PBR Unleash the Beast tour and the PBR Teams league. PBR digital assets include PBR RidePass on Pluto TV. PBR will participate in a "TKO Takeover" event in Kansas City at the T-Mobile Center. Endeavor is reviewing a possible sale of the Miami Open and the Madrid Open. Morgan Stanley and Moelis & Company served as financial advisors for the transaction, while The Raine Group and Latham & Watkins acted as advisors for Endeavor.
