How Ngapeth’s scoring surge changes Modena’s title defense

Modena's title defense hinges on Earvin Ngapeth's rumored return from Zenit-Kazan and Ivan Zaytsev's uncertain future. Coach Julio Velasco and new setter Micah Christenson aim to stabilize the roster, but the team risks losing its primary offensive threats if either star departs permanently.

How Ngapeth's scoring surge changes Modena's title defense

Modena’s current trajectory rests on a fragile foundation of rumor and replacement. The French superstar Earvin Ngapeth, who signed a three-year contract extension with the defending Italian champions to keep him there until 2020, has reportedly agreed to return to Leo Shoes Modena at the end of the season after currently playing for Zenit-Kazan. This move follows a period where Ngapeth’s name circulated around the transfer market due to controversy with his Russian team. While his presence secured two Italian Cup titles, two Italian SuperCup titles, and the 2016 Italian Championship during his tenure since 2014, the club now faces a complex reconstruction phase that tests their depth more than any previous campaign in recent memory.

The Zaytsev Factor

The most significant shift in Modena’s offensive structure involves Ivan Zaytsev, who replaced Ngapeth as the primary outside hitter. Zaytsev is two years older than Ngapeth but remains only 29, placing him squarely in the prime of his career. Although both players posted nearly identical stats last season, tying in spiker’s rating, Zaytsev operates as a more efficient hitter and server across his entire career. He can play both attacking positions, offering a taller offensive option that changes how sets are distributed. I find it hard to ignore the chemistry factor here; Zaytsev and Ngapeth have been close friends since they were teammates in Modena in 2017/18, which might increase the possibility of Zaytsev’s permanent return if Ngapeth stays. However, the more realistic option is that Zaytsev will renew his contract with Russia’s Kuzbass, where Modena sent him on loan. This uncertainty creates a strange dynamic for the coaching staff, who must build a system around a player whose long-term commitment is still up for debate.

Leadership and Roster Depth

Coach Julio Velasco replaced Radostin Stoytchev, a change that fundamentally alters the locker room atmosphere. Stoytchev was one of the most successful coaches in club volleyball history, yet also one of the most hated, with plenty of stories about him clashing with players. Velasco, by contrast, is perhaps one of the most loved Italian coaches of all times and has a long winning history with Modena. Getting him back after he had been out of club volleyball for so many years was probably the best coach signing of the off-season. On the court, Micah Christenson provides a much younger and improved version of the departed setter Bruninho. Although the Team USA star may lack Bruninho’s locker room presence, he bested his counterpart in every statistical category in this A1 season. His presence in the middle, together with Team USA’s Max Holt and Simoni Anzani, provides formidable options. Anzani started in the middle for Perugia when they won the club’s first major domestic titles in the Coppa Italia and the SuperLega, leading the whole league in MB rating. His addition gives Christenson a reliable partner in the net.

Ivan Zaytsev Opposite/Hitter Kuzbass Loan Uncertain Future
Micah Christenson Setter Team USA Active Roster
Simoni Anzani Middle Blocker Perugia New Signing

President Catia Pedrini expressed enthusiasm in an open letter to fans, stating they are "starting again" with important ambitions. She highlighted the arrival of Velasco and Christenson as central to this new journey. Yet, relying on a rumored return from a player who recently left for Russia feels risky. If Ngapeth does not return, or if Zaytsev leaves for Kuzbass permanently, Modena loses its two most potent offensive threats simultaneously. The question remains whether the current roster can sustain a title defense without either of these specific stars anchoring the attack.
