Leon and Kurek impact the volleyball landscape

Leon and Kurek impact the volleyball landscape

Leon dominates in Italy

Wilfredo Leon produces offensive numbers that overwhelm Italian defenses. During a 3-2 victory against defending champions Cucine Lube Civitanova, Leon scored 38 points. He maintained a 60% attacking efficiency, landing 31 kills from 52 attempts, while adding four aces and three blocks. This performance helped Sir Safety Conad Perugia tie the best-of-five series at 1-1 after losing the opening match at home. I find his ability to deliver such high production after his return from surgery to be the most impressive aspect of Perugia’s campaign. In that same match, Aleksandar Atanasijevic added 14 points, while Oleh Plotnytskyi contributed eight points, including two back-to-back aces at 25-25 in the third set and another two at 11-11 in the tiebreak. Lube countered with 20 points each from Luxembourg’s Kamil Rychlicki and Cuba’s Robertlandy Simon, with Simon registering 68% in attack and six blocks. The match ended 15-12 in the fifth set. Leon also previously led his team with 21 points against Tonno Callipo Calabria Vibo Valentia, where he delivered 9 aces in a 3-0 win. The set scores for that match were 35-33, 25-20, and 26-24. During the Volleyball Nations League in Rotterdam, he led Poland with 19 points, specifically 15 kills, two aces, and two blocks in a 3-2 win over Germany. Kurek was right behind him with 18 points, including 16 kills and two blocks. In that match, Bartosz Bednorz recorded 14 points from ten kills, one ace, and three blocks. Germany’s Yan Bohme produced 13 points, Erik Rohrs added 11, and Linus Weber tallied ten.

Kurek returns for ZAKSA

Bartosz Kurek returned to the court for ZAKSA after a long absence caused by injury. In the matchup against Jastrzebski Wegiel during the 11th round of the PlusLiga 2024/2025 season, Kurek scored the final point to secure a 3-1 win for his team. The set scores in Kedzierzyn-Kozle read 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, and 25-16. Jastrzebski Wegiel led the PlusLiga standings earlier in the season, but ZAKSA managed to turn the result around after trailing in the first set. In that opening set, Karol Urbanowicz gave ZAKSA a three-point lead before Jastrzebski took control. Norbert Huber scored a block against Igor Grobeln to help the visitors. During the second set, Tomasz Fornal and Norbert Huber committed service errors that helped ZAKSA win 25-22. Kurek delivered points in the third set during the closing stages and finished the fourth set with an attack at 25:16. This return follows his time playing in Japan for Wolfdogs Nagoya. The match was the 97th club encounter in PlusLiga history. Jastrzebski Wegiel’s roster included Toniutti, Fornal, Vicentin, Huber, Brehme, Kaczmarek, Popiwczak, Ignacio Finoli, Carle, and Walinski. You should watch how his presence affects the ZAKSA roster as they prepare for Aluron CMC Warte Zawiercie. Does his return provide enough momentum to secure the top spot in the standings?

Star power comparisons

The two Polish internationals influence their respective leagues through different statistical profiles. While Wilfredo Leon produces scoring totals that overwhelm defenses with 38 points and a 60% attacking efficiency in a single five-set match, Bartosz Kurek provides a different type of stability by scoring the winning point after a long absence from the court. In the SuperLega, Fipav ratified rules allowing four foreigners per team, with one slot restricted to athletes born in 2001, 2002, or 2003.
