The legacy of Rezende and the 2026 Club Championship

Bernardo Rezende established a volleyball dynasty by winning 48 medals and leading Brazil to two Olympic golds. Sada Cruzeiro now seeks a historic sixth title at the 2026 FIVB Men's Club World Championship in Poland against reigning champions Perugia.

The legacy of Rezende and the 2026 Club Championship

Bernardo Rezende, nicknamed Bernardinho, guided the Brazil men’s national team to two Olympic gold medals in 2004 and 2016. He directed the squad from 2001 to 2017 and accumulated over 30 major titles. Rezende secured the FIVB World Championship in 2002 and 2006. He also captured the FIVB World League in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2010. In 2010, he broke the Italian record by winning his ninth FIVB World League title, a victory that left a lasting impact on the sport. He remains the only head coach to lead national teams to six Olympic medals. By 2021, he earned 48 medals, making him the most successful team sport coach of all time. Before his men’s tenure, he led the women’s team to bronze medals in 1996 and 2000. In 2003, his team won the FIVB World Cup. He also led the squad to a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games. He achieved gold in the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in 2005 and 2009. During his playing career, he won the 1981 Brazil Super League and the 1983 Pan American Games gold medal. I find his coaching consistency across two decades to be unparalleled.

Renan and the Brazilian pursuit

Renan Dal Zotto is a member of the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. He replaced Rezende as the Brazilian men’s head coach in 2017. Renan played in four Olympics and won a silver medal in 1984. He led the national team to a gold medal in the 2019 FIVB Men’s World Cup. He also faced FIVB discipline in 2018 after cameras showed him intentionally rolling a ball on the court during a fifth set against Russia. That decision by the federation seemed harsh, but his refusal to apologize shows his character. Renan also won the inaugural FIVB Men’s Club World Championship in 1989. He was voted the best defender and best passer in the world by the FIVB in 1981. Renan arrived on the international stage in 1977 at the FIVB World Cup. He played for clubs like Fluminense and Flamengo.

Sada Cruzeiro enters the 2026 tournament seeking a historic sixth title to move past Trentino. Both clubs currently share the record with five titles each. Sada Cruzeiro plays Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia on December 15 at 20:30 in Katowice. Perugia won the 2025 final in Belem by defeating Osaka Bluteon 3-0. This match brings a rematch between the European champions and the South American champions. Will the Brazilian club manage to overcome the reigning European and world champions?
