Chaos in Foxborough: The Revolution Coaching Change

The New England Revolution fired Caleb Porter with four games remaining in the season. The club sits 11th in the Eastern Conference and remains 10 points behind the final postseason spot. Pablo Moreira takes over the team for the rest of the season. The decision follows a season of poor results where the team won only three times in their last 20 games, as they endured a nine-match winless run in June and July where they took only two points from a possible 27. The Revolution drew 1-1 at home against Toronto FC in their most recent match after Luca Langoni scored a last-minute equalizer. Porter’s 2024 squad suffered through injuries and poor results, such as the season where they scored the fewest goals in the league and conceded the second-most. The team entered the 2025 season with five wins, four losses, and one draw in their opening 10 games before the slump began. You already know the Revolution need stability after this inconsistent run. I find the lack of progress under Porter’s management to be the primary reason for this sudden coaching change.

Porter attempted a roster refresh before the 2025 season with 11 additions. The club signed Leonardo Campana, a striker with 28 goals and eight assists in 80 league matches for Inter Miami CF. He joins Mamadou Fofana and Brayan Ceballos, who the coach believes can win duels and play with a high line. The team also brought in Jackson Yueill, a midfielder who played 12,275 minutes over his last five seasons. Another addition, 25-year-old attacker Ignatius Ganago, played over 150 games in Ligue 1 and scored 23 goals. Porter won two MLS Cups with Portland in 2015 and Columbus in 2020, but his teams only reached the playoffs four times in 11 seasons. He also coached the Columbus Crew when they won the 2020 title, but the team missed the playoffs in his other three seasons there. Porter used senior minimum contracts for players like Luis Diaz and Wyatt Omsberg. He considered Ganago a game changer because the player is physically strong, fast, and very technical. The club also has Carles Gil and Tomas Chancalay as Designated Players. The club traded Giacomo Vrioni to CF Montreal to gain flexibility, and the team currently has Luca Langoni as a U-22 player.

The current roster structure reflects the work of Bruce Arena, who served as head coach and sporting director until his resignation in 2023. Arena led the Revolution to the 2021 Supporters’ Shield and the 2020 Eastern Conference Final. He also managed the United States national team, where he achieved the program’s best World Cup showing in 2002. Arena is currently the manager and sporting director for the San Jose Earthquakes. The Revolution have no MLS titles despite five championship game losses. Arena also coached D.C. United to two MLS Cups and a CONCACAF Champions’ Cup title. He won five national championships during his eighteen years as the head coach of the Virginia program. He developed stars like Claudio Reyna and Jeff Agoos. Arena also won three championships with the Los Angeles Galaxy, including the 2011 and 2012 MLS Cup titles. Does the organization prefer a veteran presence like Arena to stabilize the roster after Porter’s departure?
