Inter Miami coaching transition after Javier Mascherano departure

Javier Mascherano steps down

Javier Mascherano stepped down as Inter Miami’s head coach on Tuesday. He cited personal reasons for his decision. This move follows his success in leading the team to an MLS Cup title in December. The entire coaching staff also left the club. The organization provided no specifics regarding why the staff departed. Mascherano recorded 27 wins, 9 draws, and 11 losses during 47 regular-season and playoff matches. In just over a year, he guided the team to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the Leagues Cup final. The club’s decision comes as the team sits in third place in the MLS Eastern Conference after a 3-1-3 start that includes zero wins at the new stadium near Miami International Airport. Mascherano and Messi were teammates at Barcelona and with the Argentina national team. The management also handled the recent retirements of longtime Messi teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. The team fell flat in the CONCACAF Champions Cup earlier this year, despite the club making several offseason roster moves with that trophy in mind.

Guillermo Hoyos takes the reins

Guillermo Hoyos takes the coaching reins for Inter Miami. He holds a relationship with Lionel Messi that spans more than 20 years. Hoyos discovered Messi at the Barcelona academy and predicted the player’s greatness. Messi describes him as a mentor. The club also appointed Alberto Marrero to the role of sporting director. Marrero fills the spot Hoyos held before Tuesday. You likely know that the team recently opened its new stadium near Miami International Airport. The management also made several offseason roster moves to prepare for the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The club’s leadership remains focused on the performance of its Argentine staff. Will Hoyos be able to maintain the momentum Mascherano established before his sudden exit?

Argentine coaching profiles

The club’s recent moves involve several Argentine figures. This pattern of leadership includes coaches like Mascherano and Hoyos. It also reflects the profile of experienced Argentine coaches in the league, such as Willy Caballero. Caballero currently works as an assistant manager at Manchester City. He previously held assistant coaching roles at Chelsea and Leicester City. His professional career included playing for Chelsea and Manchester City before his retirement in July 2023. He is 45 years old. Caballero also coached at Leicester City from 2023 to 2024. His experience at Chelsea lasted from 2024 to 2026. He played for Elche and Malaga before moving to Manchester City in 2014 for a fee of approximately £6 million. He won the 2016 League Cup with Manchester City and the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea. He also won the 2024/25 Conference League and the 2025 Club World Cup with Chelsea.
