LAFC postseason push and the Supporters' Shield race

LAFC chases the playoffs

LAFC sits in sixth place in the Western Conference with 46 points. They hold a 12W-9L-10D record under interim head coach Xavi Tamarit. They remain two points behind fourth-place San Jose. Their recent form includes a 1-1 draw with New York City FC at Citi Field. Leo Walta scored the lone goal for the Black & Gold in that contest. Son Heung-Min earned the free kick 30 yards from goal, which Walta curled inside the left post just before halftime. Andres Perea tied the score for NYCFC with a header in the 59th minute. Hugo Lloris made a pair of saves in the opening ten minutes to keep the match level. Denis Bouanga hit a low cross in stoppage time, but it never reached a teammate. You should watch their October 25 clash against LA Galaxy at BMO Stadium to see if they can climb higher. The Galaxy face a much harder path because Riqui Puig underwent successful ACL surgery on his left knee in January. He misses the entire 2026 season. His absence leaves a massive void in the Galaxy midfield that they cannot easily fill. The Galaxy lost Puig’s presence in the midfield after his injury during the 2024 Western Conference Final against the Seattle Sounders. In the 2024 regular season, Puig recorded 16 goals and 14 assists in 29 matches.

Nashville chases history

Nashville SC dominates the Supporters’ Shield race with 60 points through 27 matches. They hold a 10-point lead over Vancouver Whitecaps FC. They need 15 points from their final seven matches to surpass Inter Miami’s 74-point record. Nashville needs to win five of their final seven matches, or win four and draw the other three, to reach the 75 points required to etch their name in the MLS history books. I find Nashville’s commanding lead much more certain than LAFC’s tenuous grip on a top-four spot in the West. They maintain a 2.22 points per game average. They hold an 18W-3L-6D record and already clinched an Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs berth. They conceded only 21 goals this season, the fewest in MLS, while their Designated Player trio provides 55 goal contributions. Sam Surridge has 16 goals and 2 assists, while Hany Mukhtar has 13 goals and 7 assists. Cristian Espinoza adds 4 goals and 13 assists. Nashville finishes the regular season with four road games and three home contests, including a trip to Austin FC for a Saturday night match. Can Nashville actually maintain this pace to break the record?

Leagues Cup rules and tiebreakers

The Leagues Cup 2026 regulations establish clear tiebreakers for teams tied in points. These rules dictate goal differential before looking at the number of wins in regulation. If teams remain tied, officials examine total goals scored and total goals conceded. The Fair Play Table serves as a final tiebreaker by counting player and technical staff cards. This table assigns one point for a first yellow card and three points for a second yellow. A direct red card adds four points, while a yellow followed by a direct red adds five. The tournament features 36 clubs, including 18 LIGA MX teams and 18 qualified MLS clubs. Phase One runs from August 4 to August 13 and contains 54 matches. The top four teams from each league table advance directly to the Knockout Rounds. Three spots in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup await the winner, the runner-up, and the third-place finisher. The champion earns a direct berth to the Round of 16.
