The DP World Tour Championship race and season updates
Matt Fitzpatrick secured his third DP World Tour Championship title after a playoff against Rory McIlroy at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Tyrrell Hatton moved to eighth in the Official World Golf Rankings following his victory at the Dubai Desert Classic.
Fitzpatrick wins the season finale
Matt Fitzpatrick secured his third DP World Tour Championship title after a playoff against Rory McIlroy at Jumeirah Golf Estates. He carded a 6-under-par 66 on Sunday to finish at 18-under 270. McIlroy hit a 15-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole in regulation to force the playoff. This eagle allowed him to tie for the lead with Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen before the extra hole. McIlroy drove his ball into a creek on the first playoff hole. Fitzpatrick then sank a 3-foot par putt to win. McIlroy finished the day with a 67. He still secured his fourth consecutive Race to Dubai title. He now holds seven such titles. He remains one title behind Colin Montgomerie for the most season-long honors. Neergaard-Petersen, Laurie Canter, Tommy Fleetwood, and Ludvig Aberg all finished in a four-way tie for third place. They all finished one stroke behind the leaders. Neergaard-Petersen and McIlroy shared the lead entering the final round. Fitzpatrick birdied each of his opening five holes on Sunday to post a bogey-free 65. He entered the week as one of seven players still in the running for the Harry Vardon Trophy.
Hatton climbs the rankings
Tyrrell Hatton moved to eighth in the Official World Golf Rankings after his win at the Dubai Desert Classic. He secured a one-shot victory over New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier with a seven-foot par putt on the 18th. This win gave him his eighth DP World Tour title and his fifth Rolex Series trophy. He is 33 and belongs to the Legion XIII team. He wants to qualify for the 2025 Ryder Cup team. His membership in LIV Golf makes this difficult because he needs an automatic top six finish to avoid the six captain picks. He and his teammate Jon Rahm still wait for the outcome of their appeals regarding fines. Hatton hit a tee box marker twice on the par-3 7th during the third round. Tournament officials questioned him about the incident. Pablo Larrazabal tweeted that Hatton is one of the best players in the world and in the top five. You should note the points gaps if you follow the race standings. Daniel Hillier finished second behind Eugenio Chacarra at the DP World India Championship. Hillier moved to number 8 in the Race to Dubai rankings with 2,162.60 points.
Safety concerns and tour rules
Fitzpatrick feels uneasy about returning to the Middle East because of the conflict in the region. He became a father in August and wants to protect his family. He specifically remembered a hotel attack in Dubai that occurred a few months before his last win there. The DP World Tour reviews safety protocols for both the Abu Dhabi Championship and the Dubai event. CEO Guy Kinnings leads the review. He won the 2022 US Open and spoke about his perspective at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
The season schedule includes a minimum of 42 tournaments in 25 countries. The Race to Dubai uses a points-based ranking for members where the top 70 players qualify for the Abu Dhabi Championship and the top 50 available players progress to the season-ending DP World Tour Championship. The total prize fund for the season outside Major Championships is 157.5 million US dollars. Shane Lowry said he is happy to wait for a decision from the powers above. Ryan Fox is also monitoring the situation. The championship takes place from November 12 to 15 on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Will the tour proceed with the planned locations?
