The 1990s Super Bowl run

The Buffalo Bills remain the only franchise in NFL history to reach four consecutive Super Bowls without winning a single championship, a feat achieved during the seasons spanning 1990 through 1993. The team reached the title game in 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994. During this period, they went 9-0 in postseason games against AFC opponents. Marv Levy coached the squad to four straight AFC championships. The roster included Hall of Famers Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed, and Bruce Smith, along with center Kent Hull. Buffalo went 49-15 in the regular season over those four years. They also secured a 32 point comeback victory against Houston in the 1992 wild card round. This group won the AFC four years in a row by defeating opponents like the Raiders and the Oilers. The 1990 team defeated the Raiders 51 to 3 in the AFC Championship. They also won two AFL titles in 1964 and 1965 under coach Lou Saban. The 1964 squad won 20 to 7 at War Memorial Stadium, while the 1965 team won 23 to 0 in San Diego. You might remember the heartbreak from that era. The 1990 to 1993 run remains a period of unprecedented consistency and consecutive losses. The Bills and Minnesota Vikings are the only franchises with four Super Bowl appearances and no wins.

The specific defeats

The four losses varied in scale and proximity. The 1990 season ended with a 20 to 19 loss to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXV. Scott Norwood missed a 47 yard field goal attempt with eight seconds left in that game, while Ottis Anderson earned MVP honors. In 1991, Washington beat Buffalo 37 to 24 in Super Bowl XXVI. Mark Rypien was named MVP, and Jim Kelly threw four interceptions. Thurman Thomas missed the first two plays of that game because he could not find his helmet. The 1992 Super Bowl was the most lopsided of the four appearances, as the team committed nine turnovers which the Cowboys converted into 35 points during their 52 to 17 victory. Don Beebe chased Leon Lett to prevent a touchdown. In the final appearance of that run, the Dallas Cowboys won 30 to 13. This followed a 13 to 6 halftime lead for Buffalo. James Washington returned a fumble 46 yards for a touchdown to help Dallas. Emmitt Smith ran for 132 yards to win MVP honors in that 1994 game. Buffalo has not returned to a Super Bowl since the 1994 loss to Dallas, a drought that now runs 32 seasons.

Super Bowl Result Score
XXV Loss Giants 20, Bills 19
XXVI Loss Washington 37, Bills 24
XXVII Loss Cowboys 52, Bills 17
XXVIII Loss Cowboys 30, Bills 13

Josh Allen and the 2026 campaign

Josh Allen currently leads the team through a 2026 campaign where he has recorded 259 career passing touchdowns. This total moved him past Jim Kelly for the most in franchise history. The Bills hold a 6-1 record this season. They recently defeated the Baltimore Ravens 36 to 10 in a Week 8 matchup. Allen completed 21 of 34 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns. His first touchdown of the game went to DJ Moore. The Bills outgained Baltimore 426 to 144. The win kept Buffalo in control of their path to the AFC’s No. 1 seed. The Ravens played the majority of the game without Lamar Jackson or Tyler Huntley. Jackson required surgery for a thumb injury. The team played its first game in the new Highmark Stadium on September 17, 2026, winning 31 to 41 against the Detroit Lions. This follows a 2025 season where the team finished 12-5 and lost to the Broncos in the Divisional Round. The 2024 season saw the team finish 13-4 and win an AFC East title. The Bills have reached the AFC Championship twice in the Josh Allen era. One loss occurred after the 2020 season and another occurred after the 2024 season. Can Allen finally end the thirty two season drought?
