A.J. Hinch Extension, Angels Manager Search, and 2026 MLB Biometric Rules

Scott Harris extended A.J. Hinch’s contract during the 2025 season, securing the manager for a second time after their initial deal ran through 2025. The Tigers finished last week with a 3-2, 15-inning loss at Seattle in Game 5 of the AL Division Series, yet Harris insisted ownership will provide resources to sign ace Tarik Skubal to a long-term deal. Skubal won the AL Cy Young Award and was the league’s pitching Triple Crown winner in 2024, then posted a career-low 2.21 ERA and 241 strikeouts this year. He signed a $10.15 million one-year contract last offseason to avoid arbitration and becomes a free agent after the 2026 season. Harris admitted the team blew the biggest lead in division or league history in September, a collapse that left him open to criticism about why he did not add a bat at the trade deadline. I find it difficult to ignore how quickly a dominant record can unravel when the front office hesitates on reinforcements, even if they later claim they had no regrets passing on specific pitchers.

The Angels’ Managerial Vacuum

Ron Washington will not return as manager for the Los Angeles Angels after two seasons cut short by health issues. The 73-year-old underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery and missed roughly half of the current season, leading to interim manager Ray Montgomery taking over in late June. The Angels finished 72-90 and last in the AL West for the second straight year, extending their streak to 10 consecutive losing seasons and 11 straight non-playoff seasons, both the longest active in the majors. General manager Perry Minasian claimed the decision was based on performance rather than health, a point Washington accepted despite saying the team was starting to perform better. Owner Arte Moreno has decided to pursue a more thorough hiring process, interviewing candidates beyond Albert Pujols, who remains the favorite but is no longer the only contender. The search includes Torii Hunter, Kurt Suzuki, Nick Hundley, Ryan Flaherty, Brandon Hyde, and possibly Rocco Baldelli. This managerial turnover follows similar moves by San Francisco, Minnesota, and Texas, creating a significant shakeup in the league’s leadership landscape.

Biometric Enforcement and Challenge Systems

MLB approved the Automated Ball/Strike System for the 2026 season, marking the first time home-plate umpire calls are not final. The system uses Hawk-Eye technology to monitor each pitch relative to the strike zone, which is defined by the ball crossing the midpoint of the plate, 8.5 inches from the front and back. Teams receive two challenges per nine-inning game, retaining them if successful, with additional challenges granted in extra innings if the initial allotment is exhausted. Players signal challenges by tapping their helmet or cap, and reviews appear on outfield videoboards via a T-Mobile network. Commissioner Rob Manfred noted that players preferred this challenge format over full automation, citing a strong preference for human involvement in the base call. Fan surveys showed 72% felt the system positively impacted their experience, while 69% wanted MLB to move forward. In spring training tests across 13 ballparks, teams won 52.2% of their 1,182 challenges. The top of the strike zone sits at 53.5% of batter height, and the bottom at 27%. Will this precision eliminate the subtle art of pitch framing, or does it simply codify what catchers have always done?
